Xavier Salazar
1971 is the year he recorded his first album for the Capitol Records label, serving as an exclusive artist for three years. In 1974 he made recordings for the C.B.S. Records label, also under a three‑year exclusivity agreement, featuring his own songs. That same year, his composition “Saltarín” was recorded for the television program Pampa Pipiltzin, performed by Maria Antonieta de las Nieves (“La Chilindrina”) and Julio Lucena.
He has written music for poems by notable authors, including the work of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the esteemed Octavio Paz, Salomón de la Selva (a Nicaraguan poet), and Jaime Sabines, a Mexican poet born in Chiapas, Mexico. He participated in the OTI Festival in 1978 with two songs: “Soy,” performed by Aria 8, and “Salvador de Flores,” performed by Fátima.
He took part in the Canto Nuevo festival sponsored by Channel 13 television. He was also invited by Mr. Sergio Romano to appear on cultural programs for Música de Mediodía. In 1982 he participated in the Ranchera Music Festival organized by Televisa in the state of Puebla, Mexico.
He has worked in venues such as Apache 14 in San Ángel, Las Glorias de Baco “La Pulquería” on Londres Street in Mexico City, and the Bar Bwana at the Century Hotel in Zona Rosa, among many other places where trova, bohemian music, and Latin songs flourished. In recent years he has performed in concert at Breve Espacio in the Condesa neighborhood of Mexico City, blending poetry and playful wit as the occasion calls for.
